VISAKHAPATNAM SMART CORRIDORS

ANDHRA PRADESH

India

Proposed Participant

Visakhapatnam smart corridors are integral to the city’s Smart Cities Mission, enhancing urban mobility and infrastructure in Area-Based Development (ABD) zones through advanced transit, green paths, and digital systems via the AECOM-developed Integrated Smart City Framework Plan with USTDA support. Launched under India’s Smart Cities Mission, Visakhapatnam’s smart corridors align with the city’s master plan, emphasising regional growth, ICT integration, and resilience across central areas like Rushikonda and coastal zones. The framework includes mobility strategies with bus transit corridors, electrification, and metro rail planning spanning 79 km to support sustainable urban expansion.

Smart corridors feature upgraded streets in ABD areas with smart lighting, pedestrian-friendly designs, cycle tracks, and public transport integration, including bus rapid transit and future metro links. They connect key districts with ICT-enabled traffic management, green buffers, and multi-modal hubs to address congestion and improve access to services. Visakhapatnam’s smart corridors will be supported by a high‑tech Metro Rail system featuring Automatic Ticket Vending (ATV) machines, LED glow signage boards, end‑to‑end smart travel cards for seamless journeys, and a dedicated metro mobile app for real‑time information, ensuring safe, efficient, and user‑friendly urban mobility.

Future Cities criteria compliance

Environmental & Nature

Green frameworks preserve ecosystems, promote low-emission transport like electric buses, and enhance stormwater management with visible water flows and storage. Strategies reduce environmental impacts through resilient infrastructure and layered green systems for public health.

Smart City

Corridors leverage ICT for integrated urban management, including real-time data analytics, instrumentation for traffic control, connectivity via fibre optics, and smart systems for energy and mobility optimisation. Digital twins and citizen engagement platforms support seamless interoperability and security.

Human-Centric

Designs prioritise safe public realms, accessible transit, and inclusive spaces informed by household surveys addressing water, sewerage, and mobility concerns. Walkable corridors foster community interaction and quality of life in diverse settlement typologies.
