THIMPHU RIVERFRONT RENEWAL

THIMPHU

Bhutan

Proposed Participant

Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, is undergoing a visionary riverfront renewal as part of the Wang Chhu Corridor project. This initiative aims to protect the natural river environment while promoting urban regeneration that builds climate resilience, enhances public amenity, and supports sustainable growth aligned with Bhutan’s unique cultural and ecological values.

The renewal project integrates natural river preservation with new public spaces such as riverside walkways, green belts, heritage landmark improvements, and flood protection measures. The Wang Chhu River Corridor is a critical green infrastructure element that links communities while preventing further urban encroachment. It also includes improved connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists, flood risk mitigation, and habitat protection to maintain the health of this vital waterway.

Environmental & Nature

Sustainability is central to the project, focusing on preserving biodiversity, improving air and water quality, and utilising green infrastructure solutions like permeable surfaces and natural buffers. The renewal advances Bhutan’s carbon-positive goals by promoting active travel, reducing car dependency, and integrating ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction.

Smart City

Thimphu’s plan incorporates smart, low-impact technologies for flood control, stormwater management, and urban infrastructure monitoring. These systems enable adaptive management of natural resources and urban services, supporting sustainable urban growth with minimal environmental footprint.

Human-Centric

The riverfront renewal prioritises human-scale design with well-lit, accessible public spaces encouraging social interaction, recreation, and cultural activities. It enhances the quality of life by connecting people to nature and integrating public art and heritage features, fostering community identity and well-being.
