SURAT CITY
India
Surat Smart Riverfront & ABD (Area Based Development) project in India is a flagship initiative under the Smart Cities Mission focused on revitalising the Tapi Riverfront to boost environmental, social, and economic aspects of Surat city. The Surat Smart Riverfront project is part of India’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Smart Cities Mission, aimed at urban regeneration and sustainable development. Covering approximately 33 km of riverbank, the project intends to integrate green infrastructure and smart technologies along the Tapi River to reconnect citizens with the waterfront and promote social cohesion and economic growth.
The riverfront development includes embankment construction to strengthen the river edge, continuous pedestrian and cycle tracks, new and improved roads to enhance connectivity, and multi-use public spaces such as amphitheatres, food plazas, and children’s play areas. The initiative also tackles sanitation and drainage improvements, incorporating smart lighting, Wi-Fi access, and eco-friendly construction materials to improve functionality and safety. It emphasises transforming the riverfront into a vibrant public space featuring pedestrian and cycling promenades, recreational areas, strengthened road networks, and advanced sewage and flood management systems to enhance resilience and urban quality of life.
