PORTO MATOSINHOS SUL / ECOCORRIDORS
MATOSINHOS
Portugal
Porto Matosinhos Sul / Ecocorridors in Portugal integrates sustainable urban expansion in Matosinhos south of Porto with the Leça Green Corridor, an 18 km environmental and mobility project revitalizing the Leça River banks across Matosinhos, Maia, Valongo, and Santo Tirso municipalities. Launched via the 2021 Association of Municipalities of the Leça Green Corridor, it transforms industrial-coastal areas into leisure zones with bike/pedestrian paths, linking the coast to the interior while advancing Matosinhos’ carbon neutrality by 2030 through smart city initiatives.
The corridor features 6.9 km of completed Phase 1 with bridges at Moreira and Pedra, Picoutos connections, restored riverbanks, and soft mobility channels fostering territorial cohesion amid Matosinhos Sul’s mixed-use growth, including waterfront redevelopments, parks, and hotels like Moov Matosinhos Sul. It enhances public access to beaches, supports blue economy activities near the port, and aligns with Porto’s healthy corridor projects via GIS-mapped nature-based solutions.

Environmental & Nature
Ecocorridors promote biodiversity via native planting, stormwater control, and habitat links, combating erosion/climate risks, complemented by renewable solar/wind projects, waste recycling, green spaces expansion, and low-carbon public transport, reducing emissions in line with Matosinhos Neutralidade Carbónica 2030.
Smart City
Matosinhos deploys IoT sensors for smart water management, real-time monitoring of waterways, telemedicine services, electric bike-sharing programmes, widespread public Wi-Fi access, and digital platforms for citizen engagement, traffic optimisation, and waste collection efficiency as part of EU-funded smart city experiments.
These advanced tools integrate seamlessly with metro line extensions, data analytics for predictive maintenance, and mobile apps enabling residents to report issues or access services, creating a responsive urban ecosystem.
Human-Centric
Matosinhos’s inclusive designs create vibrant recreational paths, family beaches, cultural facilities, and community spaces supporting vulnerable groups, active lifestyles, and social cohesion through participatory planning and accessible amenities for residents, tourists, and workers.
