NORRA DJURGÅRDSSTADEN

STOCKHOLM

Sweden

Proposed Participant

Norra Djurgårdsstaden, known as Stockholm Royal Seaport, redevelops a 236-hectare former harbour and industrial site in central Stockholm, Sweden, into Europe’s largest sustainable urban district with at least 12,000 homes and 35,000 workplaces by 2030. Launched in 2000 by Stockholm City Council as a Clinton Climate Initiative project, it tests innovative sustainability solutions amid the Royal National City Park, earning awards like C40’s best sustainable urban development in 2015.

The area transforms gasworks and ports like Värtahamnen into mixed-use neighbourhoods with dense housing, offices, services including shops, gyms, cinemas, and conference facilities, connected by bike paths, public transport, and waterfront promenades. It integrates historic industrial buildings with new developments in Hjorthagen and Gasverket, fostering vibrant communities near nature and central Stockholm.
