NORDHAVN
COPENHAGEN
Denmark
Nordhavn is the largest metropolitan development project in Northern Europe, transforming a historic industrial harbour into a vibrant, sustainable waterfront city over the next 40 years. The project envisions housing for 40,000 residents and employment for an equal number, spread across dense urban islands connected by pedestrian-friendly roads and cyclist expressways. Nordhavn prioritizes sustainable urban planning significantly by reducing car dependency.
Located in Copenhagen, Denmark, Master planned by a consortium of architectural firms led by COBE, the project is conceived as an “urban archipelago” and is renowned for its pioneering “5-Minute City” concept, which ensures all daily amenities are within a short walk or bike ride. This monumental undertaking is transforming a 3.6 million square meter former industrial port in Copenhagen. As a living laboratory for smart city technology and carbon-neutral living, Nordhavn serves as a global benchmark for sustainable urban development.

Environmental & Nature
Sustainability is at the heart of Nordhavn’s development, envisioned as one of the world’s most climate-friendly urban districts. Maximum of its energy demand is met through district heating, renewable sources, and efficient building design. The area incorporates green roofs, stormwater canals, and recycling systems to reduce emissions and enhance climate resilience along the waterfront.
Smart City
Nordhavn is designed as a smart district integrating digital technologies for efficient urban management. The city uses IoT systems for energy monitoring, waste collection, and traffic optimization. Smart grids and automated heating systems connect to Copenhagen’s district energy network, while data-driven infrastructure supports low-carbon mobility and public service delivery.
Human-Centric
It emphasizes liveability and accessibility, offering residents short walking distances to essential services within a “five-minute city” concept. The district integrates housing, workspaces, public spaces, and transport hubs to foster a balanced, inclusive urban life. Pedestrian-friendly boulevards, bike routes, and waterfront parks create a vibrant and healthy environment for all.
