New Town Kolkata, located near the eastern outskirts of Kolkata, India, is a planned township championing smart city and sustainable urban development ideals. It is recognised under India’s Smart Cities Mission, with development governed by the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA). New Town is divided into Action Areas I, II, and III, each tailored to specific urban functions, including residential-commercial balance, institutional zones, and business/IT hubs.

The township has been designed using a master plan that features wide roads, efficient drainage, digital governance platforms, and mixed land use. Smart infrastructure includes Wi-Fi zones, sensor-based street lighting, app-enabled public bicycle sharing, smart waste management, and electric vehicle charging stations. Notable projects include integrated command and control centres, smart energy-efficient lighting applications, and landscape redevelopment such as Neem Bannani Park. The township also proposes monorail connectivity to improve transit accessibility.

Sustainability underpins the urban design with rainwater harvesting systems, renewable energy provisions including solar water pumps, waste segregation, and vermicomposting initiatives. New Town implements ICT-driven systems integrating IoT for smart streetlights, traffic management, and environmental monitoring. Digital platforms enable services such as vehicle tracking for waste management, drone-enabled surveillance, and blockchain-based community applications to enhance governance and citizen engagement.

Human-centric principles guide walkability, social space creation, and inclusivity. The township features community centres, parks, accessible public conveniences, and co-working spaces. Participatory design approaches ensure community needs are addressed, creating a safe and vibrant environment that supports a high quality of life.
