MEDELLÍN RIVER PARKS
MEDELLIN
Colombia
Medellín, Colombia, has undergone a major urban transformation centred on two key projects: the Medellín River Parks (Parques del Río), which created a long, green public space to unify the city’s socially and geographically divided sides; and the Innovation District (anchored by Ruta N), which simultaneously redefined the city as a regional knowledge-economy hub and a model for social urbanism.
It is a linear park located in the central area of the Colombian city of Medellín that integrates both banks of the Medellín River, which crosses the city from south to north. The project combines engineering, urban design, and landscaping to reconnect areas once divided by the river and highways. It creates public spaces, bike paths, and a botanical park while promoting sustainable redevelopment. The Innovation District, centred around the Ruta N building, supports Medellín’s Smart City vision by driving social innovation, technology, and economic growth.
Future Cities criteria compliance
Environmental & Nature
Parques del Río restores riverbanks, adds green corridors, and promotes low-carbon mobility, while Medellín’s 2024–27 plan expands “blue and green corridors” for ecological connectivity. The Innovation District advances a low-carbon, knowledge-based economy supported by efficient smart-city systems. By using native plants, it improves air and water quality, reduces flood risks, and strengthens Medellín’s climate resilience.
Smart City
Medellín’s innovation ecosystem, anchored by Ruta N and its smart-city agenda, integrates ICT, research, and civic services within the Innovation District, a hub for ICT, health-tech, and advanced manufacturing. Meanwhile, the River Parks project applies data-driven planning, including flood-risk modelling and nature-based infrastructure.
Human-Centric
Both projects enhance liveability with inclusive public spaces, walkable paths, and accessible recreation, while the Innovation District fosters jobs, education, and urban regeneration. Medellín’s participatory planning promotes equity, mobility, and social inclusion.
