MARIJIN DVOR

SARAJEVO

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Proposed Participant

Sarajevo’s Marijin Dvor riverfront greenways in Bosnia & Herzegovina revitalize the central business district along the Miljacka River through urban regeneration plans emphasizing green corridors and resilient public spaces. Marijin Dvor, Sarajevo’s modern political-commercial heart with landmarks like the Parliament and twin skyscrapers “Momo and Uzeir,” integrates Wilson’s Promenade as a key greenway, supported by the Sarajevo Canton Green City Action Plan (GCAP) targeting biodiversity and flood resilience by 2026. These initiatives position the area as a model for post-conflict urban renewal, blending heritage with contemporary needs.

Marijin Dvor hosts commercial centres like Sarajevo City Centre, Holiday Inn, museums, and government buildings within a 1km radius, connected by Wilson’s Promenade, a tree-lined riverfront boulevard for walks, cycling, and relaxation. GCAP outlines LU10 for a Miljacka River green corridor from Central Park to Hamdije Čemerlića Street, enhancing brownfield regeneration with public realm improvements and transport corridors. This creates a cohesive urban fabric supporting daily life and economic vitality.

Future Cities criteria compliance

Environmental & Nature

Green corridors protect biodiversity (BE01/BE02), enhance soil quality (SL01), and improve water/soil management amid urban pressures, using blue-green infrastructure for flood control and pollution reduction. Efforts promote cleaner transport, waste control, and natural disaster resilience per the GCAP vision. Overall, they build long-term ecological health for future generations.

Smart City

Plans incorporate smart monitoring for environmental quality, sustainable urban drainage systems, and digital tools for water efficiency and pollution control as part of GCAP’s WR01/WR02 objectives. Emerging initiatives support data-driven flood risk management and active mobility apps, aligning with Sarajevo’s resilience strategies. These technologies enable proactive urban management amid growing climate challenges.

Human-Centric

Wilson’s Promenade fosters social encounters with scenic paths for jogging, family outings, and cafes, while regeneration prioritises inclusive public spaces for all ages and abilities. Designs enhance liveability through equitable access to nature, health promotion, and community integration in Sarajevo’s urban core. This approach strengthens social cohesion in a diverse, recovering city.
