Kitakyushu Eco-Town in Japan, established in 1997, is the country’s first and largest eco-town focused on extensive recycling and resource circulation. It serves as a leading model for sustainable industrial development by combining advanced technology, sustainability efforts, and community involvement. The Eco-Town Centre, opened in 2001, educates the public and supports circular economy enterprises.
Kitakyushu Eco-Town integrates industrial recycling plants, recycling materials, and products for local manufacturing use in a closed-loop system, supported by research institutions and environmental enterprises. Kitakyushu City in moving from a ‘grey city’ to a green and sustainable city. The city’s long-term vision aligns with its status as an Eco-Model City and SDGs Future City, emphasizing resource circulation, low-carbon initiatives, and environmental restoration to harmonize industry with nature.
