Kashiwa-no-ha Smart City encompasses around 273 hectares (approximately) in the Kashiwa-no-ha area, centred around the Tsukuba Express “Kashiwa-no-ha Campus” station, and integrates residential, commercial, institutional and green-space components. Kashiwa-no-ha’s governance model is a unique public-private-academic partnership involving Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture, Mitsui Fudosan, the University of Tokyo, and Chiba University. This collaboration is coordinated through the Urban Design Centre Kashiwa-no-ha (UDCK), which manages development and community operations.
Kashiwa-no-ha Smart City in Japan is a pioneering urban development located in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, about 30 minutes from Tokyo. It is designed as an integrated, sustainable community combining cutting-edge technology, environmental stewardship, and human-focused urban design.
Large-scale urban development is currently underway in this area, centred around a land readjustment project. Various facilities are located within the area, including the prefectural Kashiwa-no-ha Park, the University of Tokyo, Chiba University, and national research institutes, and these are major elements that define Kashiwa-no-ha.

Kashiwa-no-ha has achieved the highest LEED-ND Platinum rating, emphasizing renewable energy, resource efficiency, waste reduction, and eco-friendly building standards. The plan prioritizes environmental harmony through green corridors, water-retention features, low-carbon mobility, and climate-adaptive neighbourhood design.
Smart City
The city employs IoT infrastructure, smart grids, and data-driven urban management to optimize energy, transportation, and public services. Additionally, Co-creation labs like KOIL support start ups, digital fabrication and rapid prototyping strengthening the technology ecosystem.
Human-Centric
The district promotes well-being through community health facilities, pedestrian and running paths, and accessible public spaces. Its transit-oriented layout centred on the Tsukuba Express station, features walkable streets seamlessly linked with parks and campus amenities.
