Proposed Participant

The Governors Island Climate Centre, officially named the New York Climate Exchange, is a landmark $700 million initiative spearheaded by the City of New York and the Trust for Governors Island to build a world-leading climate solutions hub. Situated on Governors Island in New York Harbour, the centre is designed to make New York City a global leader in climate research, innovation, education, and workforce development. The project is slated for completion around 2028-2029.

The 9.3-acre campus will feature approximately 230,000 square feet of new buildings alongside 4.5 acres of new outdoor public space, and will repurpose about 170,000 square feet of historic architecture. It includes research labs, classrooms, greenhouses, dormitories, and community spaces. The centre aims to serve as a living laboratory focused on climate action, environmental justice, and urban sustainability through research, policy development, education, and public engagement.

Future Cities criteria compliance

Environmental & Nature

Sustainability is foundational, with strategies such as water reuse from rainwater and treated wastewater fulfilling 100% of non-potable demand. The project integrates ecosystem restoration, zero waste, and carbon-neutral energy generation to create a resilient climate model addressing New York’s environmental challenges.

Smart City

The campus employs cutting-edge sustainable technologies, including solar and geothermal energy systems largely produced on-site. It is designed to meet the Living Building Challenge standards and aims to be one of the first in the US to achieve True Zero Waste certification. Buildings are elevated to address sea level rise, with digital platforms supporting urban climate data innovation and management.

Human-Centric

Human-centric principles focus on community accessibility, education, and engagement through public programming, including exhibits, workforce training, events, and art projects. The centre aims to create inclusive spaces that educate and inspire residents and visitors while protecting the island’s natural and cultural assets.
