FUJISAWA SUSTAINABLE SMART TOWN

Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town (Fujisawa SST) is a pioneering smart city project established in 2014 in the city of Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Conceived as a model for sustainable urban development with a 100-year vision, Fujisawa SST was built on the site of a former unused manufacturing facility and developed to integrate technology, sustainability, and a human-centric lifestyle. The project aims to set new standards in eco-friendly, resilient, and community-driven living environments, serving as a global example of future city development.

Fujisawa SST is a residential community with about 1,000 households. It includes housing, commercial spaces, parks, wellness centres, schools, and welfare facilities. The town combines renewable energy generation with advanced energy management and smart infrastructure to improve residents’ lives while reducing environmental impact. The community uses solar power, Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS), and emergency power supply systems to enhance liveability and resilience. It also encourages active community engagement through smart platforms for interaction and collective sustainability efforts.

Sustainability is fundamental in Fujisawa SST’s design and operation. The community has reduced CO2 emissions by 70% (compared to 1990) and water consumption by 30% (relative to 2006). Fujisawa SST holds the highest CASBEE “S Rank” for eco-friendly development.

Smart City

Fujisawa SST employs advanced smart technologies to manage energy, mobility, security, and wellness. Every home has HEMS to monitor and optimize energy use. The town uses solar power and battery storage to ensure stable energy, including three days of emergency power. It also uses ICT infrastructure for data-driven urban service management and smart devices to support daily life.

Human-Centric

Fujisawa SST prioritizes comfort, safety, and community bonds. Smart platforms accessible on smartphones and tablets support resident communication and engagement. The town includes features for safety, health care, and disaster preparedness.
