CÓRDOBA “DISTRITO RÍO SUQUÍA”

CÓRDOBA

Argentina

Proposed Participant

The Distrito Río Suquía is an urban renewal plan by the Municipality of Córdoba and the Provincial Government to revive the Suquía River. The goal is to turn the once-neglected river into a central ecological and social space for the city. It introduces a linear park that blends nature, public spaces, and modern infrastructure to reconnect the river with everyday urban life.

The project runs along the Suquía River from west to east, improving areas like the Costanera and Isla de los Patos. It restores long stretches of riverfront to create the “Paseo del Suquía,” a continuous walkway with lights, bridges, and recreational spots. This new path connects several neighborhoods and is maintained by the Unidad Ejecutora Costanera.

Environmental & Nature

The project prioritises cleaning the riverbanks, removing micro-dumps, and restoring the public space. It adds green infrastructure by reforesting the banks with native species and revitalising areas like Isla de los Patos. These efforts boost soil stability and biodiversity. New sanitation investments, including the EDAR plant, aim to improve overall water quality.

Smart City

The district serves as a testing zone for smart-city tools, including IoT sensors using LoRaWAN to monitor river levels in real time. Automated barriers and digital signs manage flood risks by closing low bridges and alerting drivers remotely. The entire area has been upgraded with LED lighting to improve safety and support night-time use of public spaces.

Human-Centric

The district promotes active mobility with wide cycle paths and “River Promoters” who guide visitors on bicycles. Its Urban Art Corridor turns concrete walls into a large outdoor gallery with thousands of square metres of murals. The project also focuses on social inclusion by making the river a shared space for families, athletes, and residents through accessible recreational and fitness areas.
