Bugesera Airport City is a planned smart economic and logistics hub centred around the new Bugesera International Airport in Rwanda’s Bugesera District. Positioned 25 kilometres southeast of Kigali, the airport and surrounding city area form a critical part of Rwanda’s ambition to become a regional aviation hub and a gateway for East Africa with world-class infrastructure supporting aviation, trade, and technology.
The development includes a multi-phase international airport featuring a 3,750-metre runway, a large passenger terminal with 7 million annual capacity expandable to 14 million, a dedicated cargo terminal capable of handling 150,000 tonnes annually, and ancillary facilities including VIP terminals and maintenance hangars. The Airport City aims to integrate commercial office buildings, logistics parks, industrial zones, and residential projects, with a focus on state-of-the-art infrastructure and connectivity.

The project promotes sustainability through energy-efficient terminal design, water conservation, waste management systems, and green landscaping to minimise environmental impact. The city includes green buffers, sustainable transport linkages to Kigali, and climate-responsive infrastructure to foster resilience and ecological harmony in line with national green growth policies.
Smart City
Bugesera Airport City leverages smart technologies such as advanced air traffic management, IoT-enabled facility management, digital security, and automation in cargo handling. Infrastructure supports 5G networks, high-speed data connectivity, and smart energy solutions for optimised airport and urban operations, promoting efficiency and passenger experience.
Human-Centric
Human-centred planning focuses on accessibility, safety, and convenience for passengers and residents alike. Public spaces, pedestrian pathways, and community facilities are integrated into the urban fabric to support quality of life, social inclusion, and economic development consistent with Rwanda’s vision of inclusive growth.
