BTC CITY SMART PLATFORM

LJUBLJANA

Slovenia

Proposed Participant

BTC City Ljubljana is one of Europe’s largest business and leisure hubs, now transformed into a real-world “Living Lab” for smart city innovation. Companies test digital, energy, and mobility solutions in an active urban area visited by millions each year. This approach bridges a traditional commercial centre with a connected, future-ready smart city.

Located in eastern Ljubljana, BTC City spans about 475,000 square meters and includes hundreds of shops, businesses, and the Atlantis water park. It operates as a self-contained urban ecosystem with its own roads and energy systems, making it ideal for city-scale experimentation. In partnership with technology firms and the government, it hosts projects like autonomous vehicle testing and national smart grid initiatives.

Future Cities criteria compliance

Environmental & Nature

BTC City drives a green transition through circular economy practices, tree planting, and vertical gardens to reduce urban heat. Its smart grid and Advanced Energy Management System optimise energy use, cutting the district’s carbon footprint. Partnerships with platforms like Circular Change support workshops and strategies to create a climate-resilient, circular economy by 2050.

Smart City

BTC City’s Living Lab enables startups and corporations to test IoT, big data, and robotics solutions on real users through a dedicated smart city marketplace. Its AV Living Lab supports human-centric testing of autonomous vehicles in complex traffic environments. The district also leads in smart energy, using advanced smart grids and large-scale battery storage to ensure reliable, resilient power.

Human-Centric

BTC City enhances urban well-being by turning grey spaces into green parks and social areas, creating a “city of short distances” for work, leisure, and shopping. Safety and inclusion are ensured through smart city systems managed by the BTC Command Centre, while the AV Living Lab explores autonomous mobility solutions for the elderly and disabled.
