BRISTOL TEMPLE QUARTER

BRISTOL

Proposed Participant

Bristol Temple Quarter is a major city-centre regeneration project, turning about 135 hectares of brownfield land around Temple Meads station into new mixed-use, low‑carbon neighbourhoods with around 10,000 homes and 22,000 jobs over the next two decades. The project is led by a partnership between Bristol City Council, Homes England, the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, and Network Rail, reflecting its strategic importance for the city and region. A regeneration and development framework set the vision to expand the city centre, support inclusive growth, and respond to the climate emergency through compact, well-connected urban quarters.

Temple Quarter focuses on land around Bristol Temple Meads and nearby areas such as Temple Island and Silverthorne Lane, reusing former industrial and railway sites for homes, workspaces, and public spaces. Key elements include a modernised Temple Meads station with new entrances, the University of Bristol’s Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, and improved links to the River Avon alongside new walking and cycling routes.

Future Cities criteria compliance

Environmental & Nature

Temple Quarter is planned as a low‑carbon district aligned with Bristol’s 2030 climate‑neutral goal, emphasising brownfield reuse, high‑density development near mass transit, and net‑zero‑ready buildings. A sustainable energy masterplan, expansion of the district heat network, green infrastructure, and sustainable drainage support reduced emissions, flood resilience, and improved urban ecology.

Smart City

The University of Bristol Enterprise Campus is designed as a hub for digital, tech, and creative innovation, supporting research, start‑ups, and collaboration with business. Station upgrades and transport planning around Temple Meads enable integrated rail, bus, and active‑travel connections, forming a smart multimodal gateway to the city.

Human-Centric

The vision prioritises inclusive growth, with commitments to local jobs, skills, and affordable homes for surrounding communities. High‑quality public realm, accessible waterfronts, and community facilities are central, and the framework was shaped through extensive public consultation to ensure Temple Quarter becomes a place that benefits all of Bristol.
