BATUMI NEW BOULEVARD

BATUMI

Georgia

Proposed Participant

Batumi’s New Boulevard extends the historic Batumi Boulevard southwards along the Black Sea, creating a continuous coastal park and promenade that doubles as the city’s main public space and green seaside frontage. It forms part of a broader “green coastal strip” vision in Batumi’s planning documents, linking tourism, public recreation, and climate‑resilient urban design. Batumi Boulevard is a 7 km‑plus seaside park and promenade managed by the municipal entity “Batumi Boulevard”, recognised as a national garden‑park monument and the city’s most visited public space. The New Boulevard continues this historic promenade southwards, responding to rapid growth in tourism and coastal development.

The historic boulevard combines tree‑lined alleys, gardens, playgrounds, cafes, and a continuous walking and cycling promenade, with tens of thousands of trees and shrubs maintained by the boulevard authority. The New Boulevard area around Lech and Maria Kaczynski Park adds modern coastal parks, high‑rise housing and hotels, plus new municipal park projects such as Batumi Riviera and the park at Chacha Tower, all designed as extensions of the green waterfront.

Future Cities criteria compliance

Environmental & Nature

The Green Boulevard strategy aims to strengthen coastal green spaces to mitigate heat, manage runoff, and improve air and environmental quality in a fast‑urbanising tourist city. Tree planting, lawn and garden care, and new multifunctional coastal parks with walking and cycling routes are central to Batumi’s Green City Action Plan and low‑carbon mobility goals.

Smart City

Batumi’s Green City Action Plan identifies the boulevard and New Boulevard as priority sites for innovative green‑blue infrastructure and better stormwater management, including rain‑garden and drainage concepts to address flooding and heat. Internationally supported projects treat this coastal zone as a demonstrator for climate‑resilient urban technology and landscape design.

Human-Centric

The boulevard’s mandate is to provide a high‑quality environment for recreation and tourism, keeping the waterfront accessible through parks, promenades, and public amenities. New municipal parks in the New Boulevard zone are planned as favourite everyday spaces for residents and visitors, with sports grounds, play areas, and safe pedestrian and cycling paths integrated into the coastal landscape.
