BARKING RIVERSIDE
LONDON
United Kingdom
Barking Riverside is a major brownfield regeneration project in London, redeveloping a 185-hectare former power station site on the Thames. Led by L&Q and the Mayor of London, it’s designed as a model for sustainable 21st-century living, with net-zero goals and a focus on green infrastructure and community.
Barking Riverside, in East London with 2 km of Thames frontage, will offer over 10,800 homes, 65,000 m² of commercial and leisure space, and new schools. Sustainability is central, with 40% of the area dedicated to parks, green spaces, and ecological reserves.
Future Cities criteria compliance
Environmental & Nature
Barking Riverside uses a Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) and permeable paving to manage rainwater and reduce flood risk. The project includes biodiverse green roofs and an ecology plan to protect local wildlife, including rare birds and water voles. Homes are fitted with low-energy LED lighting to improve energy efficiency.
Smart City
Barking Riverside features an automated Envac waste system that moves trash and recycling through underground pipes, reducing collection-related carbon emissions by 90% and boosting recycling rates. The district also uses a low-carbon District Heating Network, powered by waste heat from a nearby energy-from-waste plant, providing efficient heat and hot water to homes.
Human-Centric
Barking Riverside promotes sustainable transport with the new Overground station and a Thames Clippers pier, reducing car use. The neighborhood supports a car-free lifestyle with cycle paths, shared car clubs, and community amenities like the Barking Food Forest.
