ATHENS ELLINIKON METROPOLITAN PARK

ATHENS (ELLINIKO–ARGYROUPOLI), ATTICA REGION

Greece

Proposed Participant

Ellinikon Metropolitan Park is transforming Athens’ former international airport into a smart, sustainable coastal city. What was once concrete runways is now becoming a 200-hectare green space, comparable to Hyde Park and larger than Central Park, reconnecting people with nature, boosting the economy, and supporting a 15-minute city lifestyle where daily needs are within walking distance.

Located just south of central Athens, the park stretches from the foothills of Mount Hymettus to the Athenian Riviera across multiple municipalities. Designed by Sasaki and Foster Partners, it is organised into zones with natural landscapes, restored wetlands, and cultural spaces. The early opening of the 75,000-square-metre Experience Park demonstrates the project’s vision through interactive spaces, play areas, and Mediterranean greenery.

Future Cities criteria compliance

Environmental & Nature

The project focuses on ecological restoration by planting thousands of trees and native plants, turning the former airport into a thriving biodiversity corridor. It follows a circular economy approach by reusing old runways and relying on reclaimed water for irrigation. Climate-resilient features like rain gardens and bioclimatic design help manage storms and reduce urban heat.

Smart City

At the core of the project is a smart city ecosystem using IoT sensors and AI to manage energy, water, and traffic in real time. The Experience Centre, set in a restored historic hangar, uses immersive technology to showcase innovations and educate visitors about the city of the future. Strong digital infrastructure, including fiber optics, 5G, e-mobility, and smart parking, supports seamless and sustainable urban living.

Human-Centric

The park promotes health and well-being with extensive walking and cycling paths, sports facilities, and a public beach. It preserves cultural heritage by protecting historic landmarks and linking key monuments through a dedicated cultural route. Designed as an inclusive public space, it hosts free events, learning activities, and accessible play areas for all Athenians.
