AMARAVATI

ANDHRA PRADESH

India

Proposed Participant

Amaravati was envisioned as India’s first “People’s Capital”, built with contributions from thousands of farmers who voluntarily pooled their land under a unique Land Pooling Scheme (LPS). This participatory model was globally recognized as a pioneering approach to urban land development. The design philosophy rested on three pillars: sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity.

Amaravati is the newly planned capital city of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, situated in the Guntur district along the right bank of the Krishna River, approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Vijayawada. Covering an area of around 217 square kilometers (83.87 square miles), Amaravati is envisioned as a greenfield, sustainable city integrating modern urban infrastructure with the historic and cultural significance of the original Amaravati village. The city’s development is overseen by the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) and Amaravati Development Corporation Limited. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2015, following a unique land pooling scheme where local farmers contributed around 33,000 acres in exchange for developed plots and compensation.

Future Cities criteria compliance

Environmental & Nature

A cornerstone of the city’s vision is its environmental commitment. Unlike the national norm of 10% green-blue space, Amaravati has reserved 60% of its area for greenery and water. This includes extensive parks, a beautified Krishna riverfront, and a “sponge city” approach to flood mitigation designed with Dutch expertise. All buildings are mandated to follow stringent green standards

Smart City

The city’s masterplan, designed by Foster + Partners, incorporates a central 5.5-kilometer green spine and prioritizes green mobility with dedicated cycling routes, electric vehicles, and water taxis . The plan also includes smart infrastructure like underground utility corridors to create a clean and efficient urban environment.

Human-Centric

Amaravati’s master plan prioritizes walkability, inclusivity, and accessibility, blending modern living with cultural heritage. The city aims to provide affordable housing, quality public spaces, and social infrastructure that support community well-being and economic opportunity for all residents.
